No. 2 - "The Channels"

'The Closer You Are' ('56)

Widely regarded to be the greatest doo wop ever! See the link below for some insight into what it was like to live in NY at the time of this incredible Whirlin' Disc release.

"The bottom line is that everyone on this recording is a lead singer. They’re all up front, right in your face, just wailing away. “The Closer You Are” is either a big amateurish mess, or one of the most inventive doo-wop records to come out of a New York studio in 1956"

Please Note: Earl Lewis from The Five Echoes (pictured) is not the same 'Earl Lewis' as in The Channels (thanks Riccardo). See here for more info

Many years ago I purchased repos of all their singles, and proudly played them on my radio show then!

  2. THE EAR LEWIS IN THIS PICTURE IS NOT THE EARL LEWIS OF THE CHANNELS, TOTALLY DIFFERENT SINGERS.
THE FIVE ECHOS ARE A CHICAGO GROUP NOTE THEE JOHNNY TAYLOR "DISCO lADY" PICTURED WITH THE GROUP.

  3. Hi Riccardo, Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, a completely different Earl Lewis! This Earl Lewis sang lead in The Swallows; an early incarnation of The Flamingos, before joining The Five Echoes.
